REFLECTION FOR TODAY
You people of Vitebsk want to put me to death. You make ambushes for me everywhere, in the streets, on the bridges, on the highways, and in the marketplace. I am here among you as a shepherd and you ought to know that I should be happy to give my life for you. I am ready to die for the holy union, for the supremacy of St. Peter and of his successor the Supreme Pontiff.

READINGS FOR TODAY
First Reading: Sirach 44:1, 10-15
(The Glory of God in History)
1 So let us now give praise to godly men, our ancestors of generations past,
10 But we will praise these godly men, whose righteous deeds have never been forgotten.
11 Their reputations will be passed on to their descendants, and this will be their inheritance.
12 Their descendants continue to keep the covenant and always will, because of what their ancestors did.
13 Their family line will go on forever, and their fame will never fade.
14 Their bodies were laid to rest, but their reputations will live forever.
15 Nations will tell about their wisdom, and God's people will praise them.
Psalms: Psalm 24:1-6
(The Great King)
1 The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord; the earth and all who live on it are his.
2 He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.
3 Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill? Who may enter his holy Temple?
4 Those who are pure in act and in thought, who do not worship idols or make false promises.
5 The Lord will bless them and save them; God will declare them innocent.
6 Such are the people who come to God, who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.
Gospel: Mark 10:17-21
(The Rich man)
17 As Jesus was starting on his way again, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone.
19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; do not cheat; respect your father and your mother.’”
20 “Teacher,” the man said, “ever since I was young, I have obeyed all these commandments.”
21 Jesus looked straight at him with love and said, “You need only one thing. Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.”
