Life After Your First Degree
Nigerians and indeed the African continent are facing an unprecedented rate of unemployment today and every year, institutions of higher learning produce hundreds of thousands of graduates who have no hope of getting paid employment after the compulsory national youth corps programme. Usually, the last night of the National Service year is assumed the longest and most challenging night for most of them because it represents the transition from hope to hopelessness.
The situation is so bad that the corps members would sometimes prefer to extend the service year which they receive pitiable allowances. We have therefore, millions of able bodied, mentally sound, intellectually alert young men and women who could not create a tie between the knowledge they receive in school and the realities of the labour market that lies ahead of them.
Our educational system was created to provide man-power for emerging industries, hence, the curriculum was meant to prepare people for paid employment. Previously, representatives of industries or corporations would go to universities to recruit graduates in the final year and penultimate years, such that before one graduates from school, he/ she would already have two or more employment positions waiting. The problem then would be of choice. It is surprising therefore that the school system is still the same, even when the goal posts changed a very long time ago.
<!--more-->Presently, industries are no longer there to absorb the teeming population, yet the educational system has not changed to address this anomaly and still keeps pumping out partially baked graduates into the labour market system. It still prepares students for paid employment even when they know there are no jobs for them. There is still a total disconnect between the knowledge being imparted to the students and the demands of the labour market.
The government brought in some measures like the Poverty Alleviation Programme, National Directorate of Employment and so on to address the problem but these measures could only treat the symptoms and not the root cause of the employment disease, hence, the prevalence of the problems. We have today million of young, energetic, intelligent, idle and extremely capable minds, a time bomb waiting to explode; a willing tool in the hands of selfish politicians and the devil himself. Little wonder we have had an escalation of crime, violence and not to forget suicide bombings in our countries despite the increase funding of the police and military.
